No DREAM Debate in U.S. Senate

Yesterday, just after we posted a message from the American Library Association’s Government Relations office calling for supporters of the DREAM Act to contact their Congressional representatives, the Senate failed to garner the requisite number of votes for the debate to even begin.
The 52-44 vote to advance the proposal, eight shy of the 60 required for debate to begin, prompted the Associated Press to speculate that this might signal an end to debate on any major changes in immigration policy for the rest of the Congressional calendar. However, Congressional proponents, including the act’s co-sponsor Sen. Dick Durbin, vowed not to give up on the bill.
The National Council of La Raza has background on the Act, as well as updates and strategies for how to support the DREAM Act and advocate on behalf of immigrant students.
