Timeline
This detailed chronology includes thousands of entries
dating from the establishment of pre-Columbian Indigenous civilizations like
the Toltecs, Maya, Aztecs, Olmecs, Tainos, and Caribs, through the Spanish and
Mexican settlement of much of what is now the United States, to the triumphs
and challenges facing present-day U.S. Latinos, such as the October 26, 2006
enactment of the Secure Fence Act, which would create hundred of miles of
fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border.
Though it focuses on the history of Latinos in the United
States, it also includes key events from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the
Iberian Peninsula that have had significant effects on U.S. Latinos. It is
based on the Latino Chronology (2007), by D.H. Figueredo, director of
the Library and Media Center at Bloomfield College and an editor of Encyclopedia
of Caribbean Literature (2006) and Encyclopedia of Cuba (2003), both
of which can be found in the Latino American Experience.
You can navigate the Timeline by time period by selecting a
century from the menu to the left of the entries, and then selecting a decade
from the shaded decade boxes at the top of the screen.

You also conduct a keyword Search within the Timeline by
typing a term into the Quick Search box at the top left hand side of the
screen. You will notice that the "Search within Timeline" box is automatically
checked when you begin your search. Once you’ve typed in a term, such as
"Nuyorican," you will be taken to a Search Results page with the Timeline tab
highlighted and you will be shown hits from within the Timeline only. By
clicking on any of these Results you will be taken back to the corresponding
section of the Timeline. If there are no hits within the Timeline, you will be
free to explore the hits from the other tabs, such as Articles, Primary Documents,
or Images, for information.
